Join the Committee

The MSS is founded on democratic institutions that encourage participation from our members. Most members of the Committee are elected on a yearly basis at our Annual General Meetings, and represent every part of the Conservatorium student body, from freshers to postgraduates.

Why should I run for Committee?

Being part of the MSS Committee is a lot of fun and highly rewarding. As a Committee member, you can earn invaluable leadership experience and learn various new skills including event organisation, administration, marketing, advocacy, and much more. You’ll also get to make new friendships and strengthen existing ones: Committee members work very closely together over the course of the year, and we strive to at all times promote a friendly team culture and work environment.

If that’s not enough to convince you, you also automatically get free MSS membership for the year if you become a Committee member! #perks

What would I do on Committee?

If you are elected to Committee in a portfolio position, such as Education Representative or Concerts Coordinator, you’ll be tasked with managing the duties of that portfolio and representing the MSS at the relevant Guild institutions, such as the Education Council for the Ed Rep, or the Societies Council for the Social Rep. If you are elected as an Ordinary Committee Member (OCM) or Fresher Representative, you may be asked to help out with general duties, like running the weekly barbecues and resupplying the common room, or you may be delegated tasks from the portfolio officers from time to time. You’ll also attend Committee meetings, the frequency of which may differ from year to year.

See Appendix A of the Constitution for more information.

Which officers are elected?

Almost all officers in the Committee are elected. For a full list of Committee positions, see the Committee page. The only positions that are not chosen at the AGM are the Publications Officer and Fresher Representatives. The Publications Officer is appointed by the incoming Committee just before they take office in December, while the Fresher Representatives are elected by the Fresher cohort within the first few weeks of Semester 1.

I want in!

Great! We only elect or appoint new Committee members at specific times of the year, so keep an eye out for the Fresher Elections, AGM or other extraordinary occasions when we may need to fill vacancies. But if you can’t wait, we’d still love to hear from you! We have a group of helpers known as the Society Squad, who volunteer to assist us in running events without any Committee obligations. If you’d like to sign up, click here.

All Committee positions have now been filled. But do keep an eye out for any vacancies that may arise during the year!
